KRONSTADT

Kotlin Island. Russia

2015

The opportunity to create artwork in response to Kronstadt came through the NCCA Art Residence, an artist-in-residence program run by the North-Western Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA), now part of the ROSIZO State Museum and Exhibition Center. The program supports Russian and international artists in developing projects within international art exchange programs.. The residence is located in the very center of Kronstadt, a historic port town on Kotlin Island, about 30–40 km from Saint Petersburg. It sits in a park near the town’s main landmark, the Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas.. During my five-week artist residency, all artworks were produced on the island of Kronstadt. They are site-specific, shaped by the island’s history, atmosphere, and identity as a former naval base.
