Innate Matter is a meditation on the elusive nature of completion. Set within the historic confines of the Bargate Monument Gallery, a medieval gatehouse whose weathered stone walls have witnessed centuries of passage, the exhibition positions sculpture and installation as active agents in a dialogue between permanence and impermanence, between the desire for wholeness and the forces that perpetually defer it.

At the heart of the exhibition lies a sculptural triad: bronze, wood, and magnet, each form conceived as half of a ring, reaching toward its counterpart across space. The magnetic element hovers, suspended in the charged field between attraction and arrival, never quite meeting its destiny. This suspended state becomes a metaphor for the human experience of striving: the obstacles that intervene, the distances that remain unbridged, the completion that stays just beyond reach. The works engage not only one another but also the architecture itself, each piece entering into conversation with the gallery's ancient walls, with the visitor's moving body, with the air between.

In an adjacent chamber—a former turret of the ancient city wall—a different kind of tension unfolds. An eight-foot white balloon fills the space entirely, its temporary form consuming the room with quiet insistence. It cannot exit; it cannot shift. The only release is deflation, a surrender of form, a return to air. Here, the exhibition's meditation on transience becomes visceral: what fills us, what contains us, and what remains when the breath leaves.

The artist's practice, spanning sculpture, installation, and time-based works, foregrounds the inherent qualities of materials—their weight, their pull, their fragility, their breath. Bronze endures; wood bears the memory of growth; magnets exert invisible force; latex stretches and yields. These material truths become emotional truths, inviting contemplation on how we, too, are shaped by the forces that attract and repel us, by the spaces we inhabit and the spaces that refuse to contain us.

Innate Matter does not offer resolution. Instead, it holds open the question: what does it mean to journey toward wholeness when the destination remains forever in motion? In the hovering magnet, in the sealed balloon, in the half-rings that never close, we find not failure but a tender acknowledgment of our own unfinished nature—and the quiet beauty of the striving itself.
